Serve as a senior systems administrator responsible for planning, coordinating, and installing applications software and hardware. Responsible for planning, coordinating, and supporting migration efforts from a legacy environment to a .NET environment. In addition, will install, upgrade, and patch virtual servers; identify and present associated risks and provide recommendations; identify and implement enhancements to improve overall availability, reliability, and performance; configure and troubleshoot security groups, permissions, and settings. Coordinate and collaborate migration efforts with all staff to include working closely with developers, in support of migrating all applications/solutions from the legacy and test environments to the production environment.

  • Operate and maintain all production, test, and development systems in a Windows environment
  • Develop, review, and modify appropriate configuration changes and provide accurate and updated scheduling as needed
  • Optimize the functionality, performance, and security of all hardware and software systems to ensure overall availability, integrity, confidentiality, efficiency, and reliability of servers and associated components
  • Integrate new technology into new and existing systems to include the transition and migration of applications
  • Oversee migrations, installations, and configurations of applications software and the establishment of user environments
  • Develop proposals to enhance operational use of systems hardware and software and keeps abreast of technological advances to ensure continued optimum service
  • Provide technical guidance and instruction to users and other IT specialists
  • Prepare, coordinate, and implement policy and procedures for hardware and software applications system operation
  • Perform appropriate auditing of all hardware, software, and user information
  • Implement appropriate security controls and supports secure operations assigned environments
  • Serve as a senior technical advisor to management
  • Participate as a key member and advisor on special committees and special projects designed to study methods to enhance the use of information technology throughout the installation
  • Create system administrator solutions for various project and operational needs
  • Install new/rebuild existing servers and configure hardware, peripherals, services, settings, directories, storage, etc. in accordance with standards and project/operational requirements
  • Install and configure systems such as supports applications or Asset Management applications.
  • Develop and maintain installation and configuration procedures
  • Contribute to and maintain system standards
  • Research and recommend innovative, and where possible automated approaches for system administration tasks
  • Identify approaches that leverage our resources and provide economies of scale
  • Perform daily system monitoring, verifying the integrity and availability of all hardware, server resources, systems and key processes, reviewing system and application logs, and verifying completion of scheduled jobs such as backups
  • Perform regular security monitoring to identify any possible intrusions
  • Perform daily backup operations, ensuring all required file systems and system data are successfully backed up to the appropriate media, recovery tapes or disks are created, and media is recycled and sent off site as necessary
  • Perform regular file archival and purge as necessary
  • Create, change, and delete user accounts per request
  • Investigate and troubleshoot issues
  • Repair and recover from hardware or software failures. Coordinate and communicate with impacted constituencies
  • Apply OS patches and upgrades on a regular basis, and upgrade administrative tools and utilities.
  • Configure/add new services as necessary
  • Upgrade and configure system software that supports GIS infrastructure applications or Asset
  • Management applications per project or operational needs
  • Maintain operational, configuration, or other procedures
  • Perform periodic performance reporting to support capacity planning
  • Perform ongoing performance tuning, hardware upgrades, and resource optimization as required
  • Configure CPU, memory, and disk partitions as required


  • Education:
    • Must be MSCS Certified or equivalent work experience and at a minimum
    • Certified in one or more of the follow: 
      • Security+
      • Network+
      • GSEC
      • SCNP
      • SSCP
      • CISSP
  • Required Knowledge/Experience:
    • 5+ years supporting various versions of Microsoft Operating Systems, server 2008 and 2012
    • 5+ years .NET experience, specifically migration from legacy systems and/or multiple environments/systems
    • 5+ years supporting internal and external customers in a large enterprise environment
    • 3+ years of hands on experience with IIS and web deploy
    • 3+ years of hands on experience with Active Directory (AD), specifically with configuring user accounts and application permissions in a large enterprise environment
    • Experience in a large enterprise environment
    • Quality Control and Quality Assurance process experience, specifically on applications being transferred from a legacy system
  • Preferred Knowledge/Experience: 
    • Ability to work independently and work as a part of a team
    • Strong attention to detail with a focus on continuous quality improvement
    • Excellent problem-solving skills
    • Experience with SQL Server 2012 or newer
    • Experience with Team Foundation Server
    • Knowledge and understanding of Lotus Notes/Domino environment
    • Knowledge of BMC Remedy
    • Knowledge of multiple interconnecting operating systems and environments
    • Strong knowledge of all network services and protocols
    • Knowledge and skilled in the integration of information systems and components
    • Skill in System Administration
    • Ability to proactively analyze and react to system and user needs
    • Knowledge of NIST
